Our "Clean" Image vs. Long-term Health Hazards
by Gloria Gilbčre, N.D., DAHom, Ph.D.
While it’s known that bacteria can harm us, it is also a documented
fact that specific species of bacteria are essential to maintaining and restoring health.
The dark-age view of bacteria has caused
a surge of antibacterial products from soft
soaps and disposable wipes that claim to
"wipe-out germs" to topical antibacterial
creams that are, all too often, overused.
What many consumers do not realize is
that all those fancy, scented, antibacterial
cleansers carry a very high price tag—suppression
of your immune system.
It’s difficult to imagine that the same
products that are meant to "clean-up" the
health-depleting bacteria/germs are also
"cleaning-up" the good bacteria that protect
us from disease. Since soaps are not in the
category of cosmetics, they are not regulated
by the cosmetic labeling laws requiring
ingredients be disclosed. Although some
conscious companies voluntarily disclose
ingredients, most do not.
Even as early as 1958, Dr. Joshua
Lederberg won the Nobel Prize for his
research in demonstrating that bacteria
transferred genes among one another in a
sex-like activity. Later his discovery became a
pivotal point to the new science of gene engineering.
According to the New York best-selling
book, Germs authored by Miller, Engelberg and
Broad, "His [Lederberg] discovery of genetic
exchanges in bacteria led him to warn about the
dangers of antibiotic resistance decades before
the issue caught public attention."
More recently there are concerns even
from an FDA advisory review panel
regarding the safety of using antibacterial
soaps on a daily basis.
The body’s ability to protect itself from
offending organisms can be enhanced or
weakened by a varied number of factors.
Paramount in protecting the immune system
is maintaining a plentiful amount of health
enhancing bacteria verses health depleting
bacteria.
In the early 1900s a scientist by the name
of Dr. Eli Metchnikoff established the theory
that disease begins in the digestive tract due
to an imbalance of intestinal bacteria. He
called this condition "dysbiosis," which is
derived from the word "symbiosis," meaning
living together in mutual harmony, and
"dys," meaning out of harmony (at odds
with one another). Dr. Metchnikoff was the
first scientist to discover the health
enhancing properties of probiotics. In 1908
he won the Nobel Prize for his research on
lactobacilli and the role they play in immunity.
Dr. Metchnikoff was a colleague of
Louis Pasteur and succeeded him as the
director of the Pasteur Institute in Paris.
His research proved that certain strains of
bacteria, like that found in yogurt, prevented
and reversed bacterial infection. He further
proved that lactobacilli could displace many
disease-producing organisms and reduce the
toxins they generated. He believed these
toxins become endotoxins, meaning they are
produced from substances inside the body
and, therefore, a shortened life span.
There are three types of bacteria in the gastrointestinal
(GI) tract:
- Beneficial (friendly, health enhancing)
- Pathogenic (hostile, health depleting)
- Neutral
Pathogens can easily attach to tissues, which
can cause or accelerate inflammation as experienced
in disorders like fibromyalgia, lupus,
scleroderma, arthritis, carpal tunnel, gout
and often times develop into an infection.
Speaking from personal experience as a
doctor, researcher and recovered victim of a
life-threatening disorder called leaky gut syndrome,
I know firsthand the benefits of supplying
my body with health-enhancing
bacteria.
During my much written about lifethreatening
illnesses after a serious accident,
the substances most lacking in my body were
beneficial bacterial strains. My inability to
consume most foods and supplements left
my intestinal flora severely compromised
and vulnerable to even more infection,
inflammation and autointoxication than
already existed.
In order for the intestinal tract to protect
us from health-depleting organisms, it must
ideally contain approximately 85 percent
good bacteria (friendly/health enhancing)
and 15 percent bad bacteria (health
depleting). Unfortunately, during times of
illness, use of antibiotic therapy and/or
excessive stress, the percentages are reversed.
With the raging effects of leaky gut and
multiple chemical sensitivities, I soon
learned that I couldn’t tolerate most traditional
probiotics because they contained
fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which caused
abdominal bloating and gas, in an already
assaulted intestinal landscape. That said, in
order to accelerate the healing process, my
body required high counts of friendly
microorganisms to replenish and reverse my
condition. I needed a food source that possessed
high quantities of friendly bacteria.
Therefore, I began using raw goat-milk
cheese, yogurts and kefir, which I tolerated
well. The improvement was virtually within 24 hours, most notably in my ability to assimilate
new foods, which I gradually introduced,
while at the same time enhancing my immune
system.
It is not always feasible or convenient to
find fresh goat’s milk to duplicate my initial
efforts. Since then, a product has been introduced
that essentially duplicates my initial
strategy, with all the health benefits of goat’s
milk, in an easy to swallow Caplet containing
24 billion microorganisms per serving. My
attempt to supply my body with friendly bacteria
through goat yogurt or ke.r did not give
me the advantage of a high count of microorganisms,
not to mention the energy and time
invested. In addition to the health-enhancing
benefits of goat’s milk, there was no way to
obtain six strains of probiotics fermented in
fresh goat’s milk, like a goat-milk probiotic
that contains:
1. and 2. Lactobacillus Acidophilus: Two strains containing at least 12 billion CFUs (colony forming units) per serving, produces B vitamins and a natural antibiotic, acidophilin, which inhibits growth of pathogenic bacteria.
3. Lactobacillus Casei: The most potent of all lactobacillus strains. A natural producer of lactic acid, the acid that aids digestion of carbohydrates.
Other nutrients:
4. Bi.dobacterum Longum: A potent body cleanser and immune system enhancer. Reported to help reduce cholesterol levels.
5. Lactobacillus Bulgaricus: A natural producer of lactic acid and potent natural antibiotic.
6. Streptococcus Thermophilus: Commonly used in yogurt and ke.r. Possesses anticarcinogenic and antitumor properties. Assists in digestion of milk sugar. Also contains natural antibiotic properties.
What Digestive Disorders Benefit Most
From Goat-milk Probiotics?
- Leaky gut syndrome
- Colitis
- Crohn’s disease
- Irritable bowel
- Diverticulitis
- Chronic diarrhea
- Chronic constipation
Probiotics as a Pro-active Approach
to Health
Why wait until you develop an infection,
take a course of antibiotic therapy or develop
an inflammatory or digestive disorder in
order to spur you into probiotic therapy?
Goat-milk probiotics are available now, a
statement I couldn’t make during my battle
with the invisible illnesses. They’re available
in both the higher count (24 billion) that
requires refrigeration, or in the shelf-stable
(1 billion) variety that does not require refrigeration
and is perfect for use while traveling,
long-term health maintenance or for children,
naturally.
What Roles Do Probiotics Play?
Probiotics, also known as beneficial bacteria,
are essential to a wide range of bodily
functions:
- They support white blood cells to fight disease
- They control putrefactive bacteria in the intestines
- They enhance and build blood structure by providing essential nutrients
- They assist digestion by making it readily available for absorption
- They manufacture vitamin "Bs," including an abundant source of B-12
- They reestablish the intestinal terrain that is "killed off " by chlorinated water
- They manufacture natural antibiotics, like acidophilin produced by acidophilus, which are effective against many types of bacteria, including Streptococcus and Staph.
- They lessen intestinal stress from food poisoning while aiding digestion
- They acidify the intestinal tract, creating a low pH that provides a hostile environment for pathogens and yeasts
- Studies have shown that repeated use of Lactobacillus bacteria can help normalize cholesterol levels
- They rebuild and break down hormones like estrogen
- They improve peristalsis and help normalize bowel transit time.
Why I Use And Recommend Goat-milk Probiotics For My Clients
Because goat milk is:
- Most like human milk and, therefore, more readily accepted by compromised digestive and immune systems
- Half-cleansing and half-detoxifying/ health-building
- A non-mucous forming food source, cows milk forms mucous and phlegm
- "The goat is the healthiest domestic animal known. It’s milk is superior to cow’s milk" (Journal of the American Medical Association)
- It is the most widely consumed milk in the world because of its known healthenhancing properties
- Our bodies can digest a goat-milk product in just 20 minutes; it takes two to three hours to digest cow milk products
- "Goat’s milk is the most complete food known." (American Journal of Medicine)
- Goat milk contains vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, trace elements, enzymes, protein and fatty acids
- Goat milk protein molecules are one-fifth the size of cow’s milk, making it easily digested and assimilated by those with compromised digestion and liver function.
