We all want to look our best, but for celebrities who are always under the microscope, it’s a necessity. Thanks to new advances in nutrition, supplementation and technology, we can all keep our skin looking great as we age, without plastic surgery.

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep skin glowing. Some of what we’ve heard from our mothers for years still rings true; we are beautiful from the inside out. That is why it makes so much sense (but so few of us do it) to drink our eight to 10 glasses of water a day. The average adult body is about 60 percent water. If you want your complexion to appear dewy and fresh, then you need to stay hydrated.

Dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad, author of the book Wrinkle Free Forever knows what it takes to keep skin radiant. According to Dr. Murad, “The skin is the largest, most visible organ in the human body, and it reflects the aging processes, including water loss, that occur throughout the body.” With celebrity clients such as Calista Flockhart, Lucy Liu, Cheryl Tiegs and Brooke Shields, he has to be on the cutting edge of skin care.

Always keeping bottled water on hand, even when doing something as simple as running errands, will make it easier to get the water you need. There is a wide assortment of bottled waters to choose from. You can find anything from sports waters that contain electrolytes, to mildly flavored waters, or waters that contain added nutrients or help to maintain hydration. Because of the myriad of choices available, with a little effort you should be able to get enough water and resist the temptation to drink soft drinks. Most soft drinks can actually dehydrate you.

One of the newest trends in Hollywood is to get skin looking great from the inside out. Supplements, such as those containing essential oils and antioxidants, can increase skin hydration. Damage from free radicals, along with inflammation, is associated with skin damage, disease and overall aging. Supplements containing antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, beta carotene, green tea and coenzyme Q10 are excellent at helping to destroy free radicals, giving skin a younger looking appearance.

There are many new supplement formulations that are designed especially for the skin. One of my favorite skin supplements is Biosil from Jarrow Formulas, which has been very effective for me. Biosil is biologically active silicon, which is excellent for maintaining and repairing connective tissues. Because this builds the collagen in our skin, it makes Biosil a must for anyone who wants a better looking complexion. Silicon is hard to get from diet alone. Because of Biosil’s biologically stabilized orthosilicic acid, it can be easily absorbed by the body, making it highly bioavailable. In addition, Biosil can also give a great boost to the hair and nails. Within a short time of using it regularly, I noticed a definite improvement in the look and feel of my hair, skin and nails.

Another formulation specifically created to repair the skin and help the skin make more collagen is Ageless Beauty from Europharma, which was formulated to help skin look firmer and reduce fine lines. Ingredients such as grape seed extract, biotin, red clover, borage seed oil, zinc and ginkgo are utilized to calm skin from the inside.

Dr. Howard Murad also has a line of skin care supplements. One of his most in demand formulations is the Youth Builder supplement. Said to reduce wrinkles up to 34 percent, Youth Builder utilizes curcumin, copper, selenium, grape seed extract and a combination of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids specifically designed for the benefit of the skin. Find the formula that is right for you.
