Pyruvate, a dietary supplement, is
quickly becoming the secret of top
body-builders for its endurancebuilding,
thermogenic or fat-burning properties.
Extensive and scientifically-controlled
research by Dr. Ronald T. Stanko, assistant
professor of medicine and surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, for over 25 years has established pyruvate’s ability to fight body fat without
losing needed muscle mass.
According to clinical tests (doubleblinded,
placebo-controlled) men and women using pyruvate showed 37 percent greater weight loss and 48 percent greater
fat loss from a diet supplemented by pyruvate. The subjects were fed a diet close to the average diet consumed by most people in industrialized societies. For six weeks study subjects ate a diet high in fat and
cholesterol and tests showed that pyruvate
supplementation decreased blood fat concentrations,
which are among the known risk factors for damaged blood vessels and heart disease.
In clinical tests men and women using
pyruvate did not lose muscle mass and the
metabolism remained active for all
participants so that they were able to
maintain weight. Some participants in the study even gained muscle mass. Most
weight-loss diets cause loss of fat and
muscle and that causes a slowing of the
metabolic rate and a new set of problems;
not so with pyruvate supplementation.
Dr. Stanko states, “Pyruvate has lots of
benefits, all good, but people have to work
with it by going on a low calorie diet and
exercising. Endurance is one of the major
benefits and in the 2 to 5 gram range the
only ‘side-effect’ was sound sleep, as
reported by patients.”
