YOGA OF JOY AND TRADITIONAL
HEALING MUDRAS
New Century Foundation
DVD (22.95) & VHS
|
Yoga in the West is largely associated with
stretches and static postures employed to
improve body health. However, in the Tibetan
tradition yoga includes as well, beneficial hand
gestures (mudras), sounds (mantras) and visualizations.
Tibetan yoga also includes more
movement than is typical of the yoga that most
Americans are familiar with. The DVD Yoga of
Joy and Traditional Healing Mudras by Yuan
Miao explores the richness of this yoga from
the “roof of the world” in two sections that
offer a unique introduction to a path for
improving one’s quality of life. The book by
the same author goes a step further, not only
describing more fully aspects of the practices
but also revealing an intellectually and emotionally
satisfying sense of purpose for yoga. As
Yuan Miao has observed, physical yoga may
improve health but cultivating the physical
side alone is a bit like having a beautiful vase
but leaving out the flowers.
The book makes for remarkable reading on
its own. Part documentary and part guidebook for yoga practice, Dancing on the Rooftops with
Dragons: The Yoga of Joy is the story of one
woman’s journey of discovery. Once a
renowned filmmaker for China Central
Television, through her own personal suffering
Yuan Miao came to the realization of the preciousness
and real power of joy. After the shattering
of years of material success by the loss of
her beautiful daughter, she came to a religious
awakening. This personal loss and renewal
awakened her to the mystical possibilities of
the world that manifest through her. Yuan
Miao’s system for the self-cultivation of joy,
with all its healing power, stems from many
years of practice of the Vajrayana Yoga teachings
of her Tibetan Buddhist ancestors. This
simple “Nine Step Yoga of Joy” is shared with
her readers so that they, too, might cultivate
and nurture joy in their lives. Reading about
her journey will forever change yours.

NO REGRETS - Last Chance for a Father and Son
by Barry Neil Kaufman
H J Kramer Book/New World Library
$24.95/hardcover
336 pages
|
No Regrets has been endorsed by President
Jimmy Carter, Dr. Stephen Covey, Dr. Bernie
Siegel and Neale Donald Walsch, among
others. It is a true story of an extraordinary reconciliation
between father and son, an exploration
of the fear that can rip families to shreds
and the courage and love that can bring them
back together.
Kaufman and his father had a rift between
them the size of the Great Divide. Kaufman’s
father consider him the black sheep of the
family and rejected his son’s philosophy and
teachings. When his father called him and told
him he had 27 malignant tumors in his
abdomen and groin, Kaufman responded with
excitement, “Sounds like you’re about to have one of the great adventures of your life, Pop!”
There was quiet at the other end of the phone,
then he heard his dad say to his mom, “See?
That’s why we called him. Listen to what he
just said!”
This response typified Barry Neil
Kaufman’s attitudinal perspective, helping his
father live more fully in the final two years of
his life than he had in his entire 85 years. It’s
the same attitudinal perspective he used to
cure his own son of autism. Where Kaufman
saw the cancer as an opportunity for healing a
rift and a way to deepen their relationship, his
siblings saw it as a tragedy. Where Kaufman
was honest with his dad about how he looked
after chemotherapy (like a “character from Star
Trek”), his siblings told their dad he looked
great. Where his dad felt alienated and alone
with the siblings and other family members,
he felt truly loved and respected by Kaufman.
No Regrets is an intimate family memoir
that will change how you see aging, illness and
dying.
