Krill Oil Complex: Potent Nutraceutical Synergy
by Parris M. Kidd, Ph.D.

The shrimp-like creatures called krill are some of the planet’s hardiest creatures, living in the coldest seas. Now from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) comes Neptune Krill Oil™ (NKO™), a synergistic nutraceutical complex with novel and potent benefits.

Neptune’s Krill Oil, The Synergistic Choice
Pure krill oil from Neptune is high in phospholipids and has a naturally high content of EPA+DHA structurally incorporated into the phospholipid molecules. By contrast, the EPA+DHA of fish oil are only storage triglycerides. Co-functionalization of its phospholipids and omega-3 fatty acids, together with potent antioxidants, may account for krill oil being markedly superior over fish oil in clinical trials.

Phospholipids are called “life’s building blocks” because they make cell membranes, upon which occur the important reactions of life. The phospholipids, fatty acids and antioxidants of cell membranes have a natural biochemical synergy that seemingly is carried over into the krill oil preparation.

Neptune’s pure krill oil typically has more than 40 percent phospholipids by weight (mostly PC, phosphatidylcholine) and more than 30 percent EPA+DHA. Its PC content also makes krill oil a good source of choline, an essential nutrient. Krill oil also carries potent antioxidants, including the carotenoid astaxanthin, small amounts of vitamins A and E and a unique bioflavonoid. Its ORAC value (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) is about 48 times that of fish oil and 34 times that of coenzyme Q10.

Clinical Trials Suggest NKO Superior to Fish Oils
Among women of reproductive age, 85–97 percent experience symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome). Canadian physicians conducted a double-blind trial that compared NKO against a commercial “18:12” fish oil (18 percent EPA, 12 percent DHA). Women took the supplements every day for the first month, then for 10 days each month (eight days prior to and two days during menstruation) for the succeeding two months. Ten parameters were tracked that officially define PMS.

Krill oil was found significantly effective for all 10 of the physical and emotional symptoms. Fish oil improved just 3/10, none of them emotional. Krill oil was fully effective by the second menstrual cycle, while the fish oil took three cycles to reach its 30 percent maximum benefit. Krill oil had no adverse effects while 22/34 women taking fish oil complained of unpleasant reflux effects.

In another double-blind trial, Neptune’s krill oil was compared against fish oil in men and women with hyperlipidemia. The krill oil outperformed fish oil at lowering total and LDL cholesterol and elevating HDL cholesterol; it even lowered blood triglycerides and blood sugar while fish oil did not.

Neptune’s Krill Oil Has Superior Purity and Potency
The clinical trial data suggest krill oil is at least twice as effective as fish oil, works faster and lacks fish oil’s unpleasant aftereffects. Unlike fish oils, NKO has negligible heavy metal content, very low peroxide value and very high stability.

NKO is safe and extremely well tolerated. For menstrual cycle benefits an initial intake of 1,000 mg/day is suggested and for cardiovascular benefits 1,500 mg/day. Maintenance intakes are 500–1,000 mg/day. People with seafood allergies or taking anticlotting drugs should exercise caution. Antarctic krill is a traditional food, harvested in compliance with requirements.

The co-functionalized membrane phospholipids, EPA+DHA, and antioxidants in NKO create benefits that make it unique among dietary supplements. Current clinical trials are exploring other categories of benefit. TH
