Colostrum
The cold and flu season is here, and many people are looking
for the best way to avoid the inevitable. What most
people don’t think about is that they already have a way to
fight off bacteria and viruses—their immune system. However,
like all biological functions, it must be kept healthy and
balanced. Colostrum is ideal for regulating the immune system
so that it is prepared for the real challenges your body
may soon face.
For centuries, colostrum has been used by most cultures
for healing and wellness. We know that colostrum is full of
components that can help our immune system, but what
wasn’t so obvious in the past was how. A balanced immune
system is the key, and colostrum contains the necessary elements
to do just that.
Every day, numerous antigens enter our bodies. Some of
these substances may be harmful, but many are not. Such
things as impurities from food processing and additives, such
as dyes and preservatives, on their own pose no threat to our
overall health. Unfortunately, the threat begins when our immune
systems recognizes these harmless antigens and begins
using energy in an unnecessary fight.
Here is a little analogy to better explain. Let’s say a person
begins throwing marshmallows at you. He may look like
a threat, but marshmallows will not hurt you. Now while you
are exerting your efforts to fight off the marshmallows, a real
threat comes up from behind and begins to throw rocks at
you. In the effort to fight off the marshmallows, you are now
too tired to do anything about the rocks. The immune system
can be affected in the same way. It is important that your immune
system be stimulated at the right time and suppressed
when needed.
Many studies have shown that colostrum is beneficial in
this balancing act. It has been shown to stimulate the lymphid
tissue, stimulate maturation of B Lymphocytes and prime
them for production of antibodies, suppress an overactive
immune system, and much more.
With outbreaks such as Rotavirus, SARS, West Nile Virus,
and, more recently, the threat of an Avian Flu pandemic, an
even greater interest in research has been focused on the benefits of colostrum. Colostrum has already been used to treat
many cases of rotavirus, and studies have shown that oligosaccharides,
a component of colostrum, are instrumental in
the binding of some strains of influenza. It has been found to
be not only effective against viruses, including cold and flu,
but also useful in neutralizing most harmful bacteria and fight
toxins. Taking daily supplements of colostrum may improve
your immune systems ability to distinguish harmless antigens
and remain strong enough to fight off harmful pathogens this
coming season.
