PS (phosphatidylserine)

PS, or phosphatidylserine (pronounced fos-fa-tiedil-ser-een), is a phospholipid nutrient widely recognized for its clinically proven brain benefits. Clinical studies of PS number more than 20 conducted double-blind, and a total of more than a hundred. They prove PS has benefits for conditions as diverse as age-associated memory impairment and other cognitive problems, such as learning and comprehension, dementia, depression, stress (emotional and physical), and anxiety. Preliminary studies with children indicate that PS can benefit the attention, behavioral, and learning problems that often accompany ADHD.

PS is naturally present in all cells, including those of humans where it is most concentrated in brain cells. This natural involvement of PS in our life processes is consistent with its unsurpassed bene. ts and its impeccable safety as a dietary supplement. Further, by being such an orthodox molecule for human biochemistry, PS is an orthomolecule. Orthomolecules characteristically make very safe dietary supplements that are also well tolerated and highly effective.

As detailed in my book PS, Nature’s Brain Booster, this orthomolecular nutrient is the biochemical hub of a wide range of nerve cell functions. PS is required to build the dynamic membrane structures upon which these and other cells function. This helps explain how it can help turn back the clock on memory loss. Subjects who take PS experienced partial reversal of their memory, learning and other cognitive losses. Some have improved by up to 12 years’ worth.

In this modern world, virtually everyone can benefit from PS. For one thing, sustained emotional stress kills brain cells and brain circuits. PS helps support and revitalize the HPAA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), those parts of the brain and associated organs that mainly manage stress.

You should begin taking PS right as you (or those around you) notice you have a problem. PS can be started at 300 milligrams a day for the first month, then either held there or lowered to 100-200 milligrams. PS operates in functional synergy with the omega-3 DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), making supplementation with DHA also an excellent idea (at perhaps 500 milligrams a day or more).

The newly emergent brain paradigm holds that our brains have built-in stem cells that can make new brain circuits. These spring into action under stimulation from growth factors produced by the brain’s healthy cells. PS supports growth factor action. By combining PS with a healthy lifestyle and diet, sufficient sleep, and mental and physical exercise, we can realistically hope to recover brain functions lost to the ravages of toxic chemicals, stress and overwork, or the mere passing of time.
