Aftab J. Ahmed, Ph.D.

Dr. Aftab J. Ahmed is the director of R&D and Business Development at Marlyn Nutraceuticals, Inc., Scottsdale, Arizona. Part of his responsibilities includes attending to the regulatory affairs. As such he is well versed in both the domestic and international regulatory environment.

Dr. Ahmed is a respected author. His books include Health Benefits of Human Growth Hormone, Advanced Glycation Endproducts and Aging Gracefully (Keats Publishing). He is also author of numerous scientific articles and reviews and he lectures widely. Dr. Ahmed is a sought-after public speaker and appears on radio and television interviews nationwide.

After receiving his Ph.D. Dr. Ahmed, during his academic career, was primarily involved in developing therapeutic modalities for chronic human conditions. With training in molecular genetics at Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, his post-graduate work focused exclusively on designing gene therapy protocols for proliferative conditions such as stroke and neurodegeneration. Thus as a faculty member at University of Texas Medical School at Houston (assistant professor) and Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago (associate professor), he clinically tested various approaches to deliver genes to tissues of interest including the spinal cord and brain.

As he continued his research in the clinical management of chronic conditions, Dr. Ahmed became increasingly convinced that these diseases are best prevented rather than cured since, despite its impressive achievements, biomedical research has a long distance to traverse to develop therapies for chronic diseases. As the median age of the populations worldwide steadily increases, the challenge for medicine in the first half of the 21st century will be to manage increasing numbers of elderly people who are afflicted with chronic diseases. Chronic diseases compromise the quality of life and can severely limit mobility and personal autonomy.

Clinical observations are corroborated by tentative epidemiological data that chronic diseases and frailties in their wake could potentially be held at bay by incorporating preventive regimen. Preventive regimens by definition imply proper nutrition, sensible lifestyle and regular exercise. The more Dr. Ahmed thought about the incipient healthcare challenge, the more he became convinced that nutritional intervention may provide a means to enhance the quality of life well into the later years of human life. Furthermore, a nutritional approach may not only help to delay the onset of potential illnesses but also reduce the severity of the symptoms.

The basic premise of Dr. Ahmed’s thinking rests on the fundamental recognition that the human body has immense innate ability to heal itself. It exists in health in a state of equilibrium, known scientifically as homeostasis. It is this balance that confers the immense potential for health within us. When this balance is disturbed, diseases result. Thus sensible nutritional intervention early enough in life, has the potential of fostering health and long life with a high quality quotient.

Utilizing this recognition, Dr. Ahmed is currently developing nutritional approaches which promise to allow the body to produce beneficial substances to promote better health. These so-called “intrabiotics” intend to introduce an entirely novel approach to maximize the impact of preventive healthcare.

One of the major challenges in preventive nutritional therapy is enhancement of absorption of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract and their delivery to specific tissues. This is a challenge common to all therapeutic/corrective modalities. Consequently, Dr. Ahmed’s present interest is geared toward both delivery of corrective nutrients and their targeted delivery to various tissues to garner optimal health benefits. His work in this area portends to have far-reaching implications not only for preventive but also curative approaches for chronic diseases.

Dr. Ahmed is a well-recognized author and a seasoned public speaker. He regularly appears on radio talk shows and TV documentaries on television. He has also contributed articles to totalhealth, which readers have found interesting and thought provoking. With his academic background, Dr. Ahmed is one of a handful of scientists-turned-businessmen who have made a transition into the industry of devising novel approaches to meet the healthcare needs of Americans in the new century.
