| “The most beautiful and most profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of our spirit. It is the power of all true science.” |
| —Albert Einstein |
Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., is the author of Brain Longevity and The Pain Cure. His book in progress, Meditation as Medicine, expands his work on mind power healing. He is the president/medical director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Foundation in Tucson, AZ, the world’s leader in the holistic or integrative approach to the prevention and reversal of memory loss. In June 1999, he was proclaimed a Yogi by his teacher, the Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Bhajan, the highest living yoga master in the world. Khalsa is therefore one of only a few individuals who are both physicians and yogis.
One of the most marvelous things that have happened as we enter into the new millennium is that we have recognized the power of inter-connectedness. The basis of this is that we are all part of the family of human beings. We are becoming more soul-driven with the realization that there is a greater power than ourselves active in our lives.
I have learned from my work with many patients that the development of this realization of inter-connectedness is the ultimate benefit of brain longevity. The brain is flesh and blood like the rest of the body and hence is capable of extraordinary abilities. When it is nurtured, the results can be profound. Whether you are a medical professional or a lay person, I believe the development of your mind power is the most important thing you can do in the 21st century. It will help you reach your highest potential as a human being.
We can have sharp minds at every age or stage of life. Age-associated memory impairment can be eradicated and early cognitive decline can be nipped in the bud. In my view, Alzheimer’s disease is, in large measure, a disease of lifestyle and hence a preventable illness. Beyond that I think we can use our minds to help heal any illness, develop optimal health and heal others at a distance.
We have known for almost a century that chronic, unbalanced stress can kill. Moreover, for the past 30 years research has shown that the opposite of the stress response, the relaxation response (RR) can save lives, improve medical outcomes and reverse chronic illness. My work shows that what I call “medical meditation” (MM) is faster, more accurate and more potent than the relaxation response. The five ingredients of MM are breath, posture, mantra (special sounds or words), mudras (fingertip positions which stimulate the motor-sensory area of the brain) and focus of concentration. By combining them in prescribed ways, healing energy is directed toward a specific organ or system.
This healing energy entails the complete mind-body-spirit connection. From a functional view, the proper configuration of peptides and informational molecules, which circulate throughout the entire body, create the optimal healing milieu. Beyond that, this healing energy, known as the “kundalini” in yogic terms, releases blocks in the affected ethereal energy centers of the body, called chakras. The energy then travels up the central channel near the spinal cord, the “sushumna,” to the highest brain centers, creating an exalted state of being. It is this exaltation that is known as “spirit,” and it is this spiritual essence that we call “God” that ultimately creates total health and healing.
It is everyone’s birthright to be healthy, happy and whole as a human being. Now is the time to claim this power of yours by revitalizing your mind and spirit on a daily basis. You can do this in your own way, within your own commitment. One suggestion is that you perform a routine of morning exercise, breath-work, meditation and prayer. This is one key to unlocking the door to excellence in the new millennium. Let’s begin now to use the power of our mind.
Inhale and hold your breath,
for the peace of the world.
For the health of all
To make everybody happy
So those who are lonely may have their partner
And God may find mercy on everybody,
On each individual.
Say this prayer on this breath and please exhale.
This is the charity of the breath.
Inhale again.
Pray for all the dear ones, related ones, known and unknown,
On the whole planet—for those who are sick, those who are
Unhappy, unhealthy or Need spirit.
Send this thought, by doing a prayer on this breath.
Let the breath go.
Inhale deeply, again to end all causes and effects, which affect
All men and make
Them unhappy or in pain.
For anything that brings war and destruction
For anything that brings hatred and jealousy.
Say a prayer on this breath and let it go. Inhale deeply.
May the longtime sun shine upon you
All love surround you
And the pure light within you
Guide your way on and on and on.
Exhale and relax.
