Ginkgo Biloba and Additional Ingredients

GINKGO BILOBA
by Hyla Cass, M.D. www.cassmd.com

Ginkgo biloba is the fifth most widely used herb in the United States. It has shown proven effectiveness for enhancing memory and mental function, improving blood circulation to the brain, reducing inflammation, relieving allergies and asthma and protecting the body from the effects of aging. Ginkgo’s well-earned reputation is supported by more than 30 years of scientific and clinical research.

It can also, improve memory in both normal adults and those with Alzheimer’s disease, visual acuity, pulmonary function and sexual function and desire in both men and women. It can inhibit platelet aggregation and the tendency for blood to clot abnormally, reduce or eliminate vertigo (dizziness and loss of stability) and reduce elevated blood pressure.

BIOCELL COLLAGEN II
by totalhealth editors

Normal joint function requires healthy cartilage and bones, smooth gilding surfaces, synovial fluid, normal joint spaces and normal soft tissues surrounding the joints. Of the many substances required for the normal functioning of the joints, collagen is one of the most important. Through the advancement of preventive nutrition, we can now not only halt the progression of arthritis but can also improve the condition and provide relief to sufferers by using safe and natural nutraceuticals. An effective and comprehensive nutraceutical substance that uses this approach is BioCell Collagen II.

In order to benefit the arthritic conditions, collagen type II must be present in high concentrations to provide structural support and cushioning properties to the joints. Interwoven within BioCell Collagen II are certified amounts of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, two important elements that give BioCell Collagen II its water retentive properties. Hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate are concentrated in the synovial fluid, cartilage and extra cellular matrix. Results of a subjective clinical study of 89 random subjects with various types of pain syndromes showed that 90 percent of the participants reported benefits in using BioCell Collagen II for a short period of time.

SYSTEMIC ENZYMES
by totalhealth editors

The term systemic enzymes encompasses those enzymes such as trypsin, chymotrypsin and the like, that are found naturally in the body. Some of the enzymes found in plants are also included in this term, since they function in a manner similar to those indigenous to the human body. Systemic enzymes should be clearly differentiated from digestive enzymes, which are essentially responsible for aiding the digestive process. In contrast, systemic enzymes exert their beneficial effects at a cellular level, replenishing, in advanced years, the declining reservoir of naturally occurring enzymes in the cells.

Systemic enzymes effectively reduce the production of proinflammatory cytokines and inhibit the invasion of synovia by activated immune cells. Interfering with these basic processes, while mobilizing the body’s own resources over time, systemic enzymes help to reduce local pain and regional swelling and gradually improve joint function. The reason systemic enzymes are effective is that their unique combination simultaneously functions at different levels in the immune system. By reducing the amounts of proinflammatory immune complexes in the body, systemic enzymes empower the body to heal itself.

CETYL MYRISTOLEATE
by totalhealth editors

Cetyl Myristoleate has been shown to function on chronic pain in the following four ways. First, for its lubricating quality. Decrease or loss of morning stiffness is commonly noted shortly after commencing treatment. Next, it functions as an anti-inflammatory. Lessening of swollen digits is often seen after the fourth or fifth week of treatment. Third, it functions as an immunomodulator or immune system regulator. Its ability to regulate or calm down hyper-immune responses and downs that CM may be helpful in addressing the symptoms related to many autoimmune diseases. Finally, CM functions as an analgesic or pain killer and has been helpful to many sufferers of muscle tension headaches and fibromyalgia.

5-HTP
by Jacob E. Teitelbaum, M.D.

From Fatigued to Fantastic!

The supplement 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP), a form of the amino acid tryptophan, raises serotonin levels and can be very helpful for pain. Take 100 to 400 milligrams at night. When used for six weeks, a 300- to 400-milligram dose has been shown to decrease PMS pain and often helps people to lose weight. Your body uses 5-HTP to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps improve the quality of sleep. The one caution to note is that if you are taking a number of treatments that increase serotonin (these include antidepressants like Prozac, St.-John’s-wort, Ultram, Desyrel and the like), taking high doses of 5-HTP can result in a serotonergic reaction, a life-threatening reaction caused by a too-high level of serotonin.

GLUCOSAMINE SULFATE
by Jacob E. Teitelbaum, M.D.

From Fatigued to Fantastic!

Glucosamine is a cartilage compound that has been shown, in several controlled studies, to be helpful for osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis). Although the exact way it works is not certain, it appears to stimulate cartilage production by bone cells. The usual dose is 500 milligrams three times a day. It usually takes two weeks to see any effect and six weeks to tell if it will help or not. After six weeks, I would stay on 1,500 milligrams a day until the beneficial effect plateaus and then drop it to the lowest dose it takes to maintain the effect. Also, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs do not slow down the progression of arthritis and may actually make the arthritis worse. Glucosamine may actually help to heal the arthritic joint. Benefit often persists after the glucosamine is stopped. TH
