Moducare - Healing Through Balance

 hat causes one person to catch a cold
or flu and another to avoid it? Why
does one person with HIV live
without symptoms while another quickly
develops full-blown AIDS? What allows
someone to be incapacitated by allergies? Why
do serious outbreaks of infectious diseases leave
some individuals untouched? Most people don’t
realize it but the answer lies within the most
powerful disease-fighting machine hardwired
into our body—our immune system.
Many types of dysfunction occur in the
immune system to cause disease. When the
immune system is suppressed due to stress or
inadequate nutrition we are susceptible to
cancer, colds, flu and more serious infections. Or
the immune system could be working overtime
and then we see allergies, arthritis, fibromyalgia
and autoimmune diseases like lupus and
rheumatoid arthritis. What the immune system
needs to ward off disease is to be balanced.
What Is ModucareTM?
The story of sterols and sterolins began in South
Africa decades ago when, as a boy, RW
Liebenberg witnessed the startling recovery of
his uncle from prostate cancer. Doctors could do
nothing more for him and he was sent home
from the hospital to get his life in order and die.
Family and friends arrived to pay their last
respects. A neighbor also visited and offered a
traditional South African brew, known for its
healing properties, for him to drink. Day by day
he grew stronger and eventually recovered from
his cancer. This experience began a lifetime of
work for RW. He knew he had to find the active
ingredient in the brew that resulted in his uncle’s
miraculous recovery.
RW was not a scientist but he studied chemistry,
plants, human physiology and everything
he could find on cancer treatments using plants.
He enlisted the help of researchers and discovered
that the active ingredients were plant fats
called sterols and sterolins. Sterols and sterolins
naturally occur in all fruits, vegetables, seeds and
nuts. Together they work to enhance the immune
system but unfortunately sterolins are easily
destroyed through processing, freezing and some
cooking methods and without them, the sterols
do not have these same powerful benefits.
Over the following years, RW developed a
supplement that contained the ideal combination
of sterols and sterolins, known as the
patented product Moducare™. RW then went
on to fund the clinical studies that Professor
Patrick Bouic has worked on, using the
Moducare formula. Moducare selectively
increases an underactive immune system and/or
controls an overactive one—making it a must as
a daily supplement for immune support.
Professor Bouic, head of immunology at
Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South
Africa, has shown in his research that Moducare is
effective at enhancing an underactive immune
system and/or decreasing an overactive one. In
other words—Moducare works by modulating
the immune system. Following are just some of
the ways that Moducare works to fight off disease.
Stop Allergies Where They Start—In Our Immune System
In an allergy-prone person, when the immune
system encounters an allergen such as pollen,
certain cells within the body release histamine,
which is responsible for the watery eyes, itchy
skin and other symptoms common with allergies.
This response occurs to help get rid of what
the body sees as an invader. In a study where
individuals who suffered from allergies were
given Moducare, plant sterols and sterolins,
results showed a significant decrease in allergy
symptoms. Moducare halts the cells of the
immune system from releasing histamine, which
causes unwanted allergy symptoms.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Pilot Trial
A double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial
enrolled 19 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients for
a six-month study. The participants were given
either a placebo (fake pill) or Moducare and the
effectiveness of the treatment was based on criteria
set out by the American College of
Rheumatology. In the placebo group no signifi-
cant changes were reported. In the treatment
group, patients reported less pain, improvement
in the number of tender joints, less swollen joints
and an overall improvement of their disease
activity. The use of anti-inflammatory pain medication
was also reduced. These results showed
that Moducare may be an effective supplement
for controlling tissue damage in RA sufferers and
now a large-scale trial is underway in the U.S.
Moducare Halts T Cell Decline in Persons Affected with HIV
T cell counts are very important to someone
who is infected with the HIV virus. When T cell
counts drop below 200 in someone with HIV,
this is when full blown AIDS develops. In a study
preformed by Bouic and his colleagues, 200 HIV-infected people, who were not using any
anti-retroviral medication, were given Moducare
for 40 months. As these HIV-infected subjects
were studied, it showed that their T cell counts
stabilized. Subjects who began the study with T
cell counts higher than 500 experienced
increases; those with 200–500 hardly lost any
numbers and remained within this range; those
with less than 200 experienced a decline in the
number of T cells. This research was presented at
the International AIDS Symposium in Durban,
South Africa in 2001 and it has prompted health
departments in Botswana and South Africa to
recommend Moducare for the treatment of HIVinfected
persons.
Prostate Protection
Urologists in Germany have been using plant
sterols and sterolins for over two decades to treat
benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) or enlarged
prostate. Symptoms of prostate trouble begin
with frequent urination, especially at night;
trouble starting or stopping a urine stream or
dribbling; painful ejaculation; low back pain;
chronic constipation or a burning sensation
upon urination.
One double-blind, placebo-controlled study
that involved 200 patients with an average age of
65 and a diagnosis of BPH was published in The
Lancet. After a four-week “washout period”
where medication was restricted, patients were
given sterols and sterolins for six months. The
treatment group experienced rapid reduction of
the symptoms mentioned above, increased peak
urinary flow and decreased inflammation. Based
on the conclusions of this study, sterols and
sterolins are an effective treatment for BPH.
Future research will continue to explore the
immune benefits of plant sterols and sterolins.
